漫舞運動 slow dance movement, book club, and vinyl listening sessions
「漫舞運動 SLOW DANCE MOVEMENT」
hii friends! i’m so excited to share about my new book club which will be at the last weekend of every month in taipei in collaboration with the new vinyl bar in guting, chao bar 潮電 Bar&RecordStore! i’m beyond grateful and so stoked that it will be at the perfect location — chao bar is such a gorgeous magical space and fitted with the proper sonic equipment for deep vinyl listening sessions so i feel like my rambly substack posts can now expand to group listening sessions. here’s some info about the monthly residency under my audiovisual archive label 「鹽埕區長 salt district mayor」:
「漫舞運動 SLOW DANCE MOVEMENT」 is a monthly gathering presented by 「鹽埕區長 salt district mayor」 on the last weekend of each month at 潮電 Chao Bar&RecordStore where we ramp down the tempo to engage in deep listening together. We’ll warm up with our TAIWANESE MUSIC HISTORY BOOK CLUB and listening session, where we’ll survey Taiwanese sonic landscapes and histories from pre-war gramophone 78 records to 1960s Taiwanese hokkien pop records to post-martial law Taiwanese new waves. We’ll dive into the development of recording technology, vinyl manufacturing history, music production and distribution all the way to modern electronic dance music. Let’s listen to the echoes of time so we can understand the musical lineages that set the stage for new creations today. Each week there will be a SALT DISTRICT MAYOR TOWN HALL, inviting local DJs to perform downtempo sets and vinyl sharing sessions. Come join our slow dance movement!

for the first book club kickoff session, we’ll be diving into the chapter on taiwanese bootleg vinyls from Andrew F. Jone’s Circuit Listening: Chinese Popular Music in the Global 1960s. i’ll be playing a full-vinyl set, pulling taiwanese bootleg vinyls from the 60s from my collection and joined by good friends who will share downtempo DJ sets. i’ll be recording the sets so stay tuned for the next substack where i’ll bring back mixes and share about the history behind these taiwanese bootleg vinyls!
took some design inspo from early vintage taiwanese 電塔唱片 tower records for the book club flyer hehe.
